TRANSCRIPT:
Looking back:
In around the middle of 2020 a friend sent me a message saying “hey Simon you should make a podcast…”
(Smith and Tanaka)
I really liked the idea because I listen to A LOT of podcasts (and...in JHS I wanted to be a radio DJ!)
So I started making test episodes..the first few were very difficult and I got a bit frustrated….
but then one day while listening to Hougen News for uchinaguchi study
I realised this is what I should do:
translate English content from the internet into Japanese!
I started making a test episode every week,
and on Jan 17th 2021 I uploaded my first 3 episodes,
and have (mostly) kept to my one-a-week schedule all year!
How’d it go?
Mostly pretty well:
Over 2021 I got comfortable with:
-
the format (one article, several articles)
-
the content (environment, gender, news, corona, olympics, self-help)
-
recording and editing – recently I added video, and each episode takes me a lot less time now!
So in 2021 I learned how to make podcast!
So what’s next?
Every week I get quite disappointed by the number of downloads...I want to reach more people because:
-
I work hard on these episodes!
-
I think the issues I’m addressing are important! (“save the world”)
-
I think my approach to language learning has value….
So I really need to promote my podcast...
Also...right now I get up at 4am to work on it before going to work! This is rather tiring…if I could get some income from my podcasting I could maybe teach fewer classes and so have more time for creating content….
This makes me nervous:
I can create content no problem...but am very bad at promoting it, and terrified of asking for money...
(my brain: “no one is going to be interested…”)
So in 2022 I’m going to work on these emotional issues…
I’m going to promote my podcast by:
-
sending messages to people who do similar content
-
do some paid advertising on SNS…
(With that in mind...please share! Also, write a review!)
and try to add some income by:
-
crowdfunding?
-
Sponsors???
-
offer a course in language learning...
So, to sum up:
in 2020 I started developing this podcast (helped hugely by Mr.Smith)
in 2021 I started publishing it, and spent the year improving how I work.
So in 2022 I want to get more listeners, and try to develop some income from it
Ok, that’s all for today – thanks for letting me vent!
Hey listeners what do you think?
Your turn to vent! Would you like some tea? Have some tea...
-
Have you enjoyed the podcast this year? Do you think it’s improving? Do you have any advice or suggestions?
-
And how do you feel about promotion and monetizing – do you find it easy, or do you have similar problems to me?

TRANSCRIPT:
Christmas: The Holiday of Cultural Consumerism
Posted on December 2, 2013 by Russia Robinson
During the month of December, American streets are taken over by Christmas. From large cities to small towns, Christmas decorations are seen on every street corner, every shop has a Christmas tree and plays Christmas music, and people and companies hold Christmas parties.
Thanksgiving and 4th of July are other American holidays, but Christmas is much bigger - why? To understand this we need to look at the history of Christmas
Originally Christmas was a small Christian church tradition celebrating the birth of the baby Jesus. In the Bible story three Kings traveled across the desert to give the baby Jesus gifts, which is where the idea of gift-giving originally started.
Then in 1823 the poem, ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ redefined our image of Christmas and Santa”,
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
and in 1874 Macy’s Department Store began to show Christmas gifts in storefront windows,
then in 1931 Coca Cola featured Santa Clause in an advertisement campaign – this is the first time Santa appeared in his red and white outfit (red and white were Coca Cola logo colors)
Hollywood played an important role in creating the consumer christmas “tradition”, for example the American classics Scrooge (1935) and “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947) both strongly tell us that the point of Christmas is to buy and give gifts.
So the “tradition” of Christmas clearly encourages consumption
but not just presents - Christmas cards, figures and figurines, Christmas tree toppings, lights, costumes, and clothes, foods, also packing and shipping industry, and even the travel industry.
2010 total retail sale was $137.4 billion – a big part of the US economy!
The original meaning of Christmas was about religious beliefs, family, friends, and community
But this was changed by companies and advertising for one basic purpose- to increase spending, increase industry profitability, and stimulate the American economy
Ok that's all from today's article

Hey Simon what do you think?
私に一コメントさせていただければ・・・
Let me get my tea...sound effect...so I can do some drinking with my thinking....
1997 couldn’t really buy a christmas tree, but now christmas is everywhere – the consumer economy of Japan realised there was profit to be made by importing this “tradition”
But consumer society uses too much energy and too many resources – it’s destroying the environment that supports our civilization, and so it may soon destroy our civilization…
That's what I think - thanks for letting me vent!
気持ちを吐き出させてくれて・・・ありがとうね❤
Hey listeners what do you think?
Your turn to vent!
Would you like some tea?
1. Do you celebrate Christmas? Has it become a bigger event over the last 20 years or so?
2. Do you think Christmas has been imported into Japan basically to increase the profits from the consumer economy?

TRANSCRIPT:
Three decades ago the British evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar proposed that your social life has a biological limit: 150 people.
We can maintain much larger networks, but only by compromising quality.
But online life is all about maximizing the quantity of connections without caring about their quality.
Before online tools, we talked less frequently, and with fewer people.
The average person had a handful of conversations a day, and only occasionally talked to a large group (for example at a wedding, a business meeting, or a conference).
Online media allows us to speak to millions.
This is because Google, Facebook, Twitter, are really data companies: They suck up information when people search, post, click, and reply, and use that information to sell targeted advertising.
So encouraging as many people as possible to “speak” online as much as possible means they make as much money as possible.
Adrienne LaFrance calls this “ megascale” - billions of people using the service constantly.
The quality of material being produced is irrelevant.
QuaLity….Like
Quantity….Number
Lots and lots, even if lots and lots of garbage.
The problem here is that some of the garbage is very dangerous: conspiracy theories, hate, and even violence: child and sex abuse, murder and suicide.
To combat this Facebook employ an army of content moderators: (that job is so terrible that it causes mental and emotional trauma)
(They are also trying AI but it isn’t actually intelligent enough to work effectively.)
Wouldn’t it just be better if fewer people posted less stuff, less frequently, and if smaller audiences saw it?
What if, for example, you could post to Facebook only once a day, or week, or month?
Or only to a certain number of people?
Or what if, after an hour or a day or 500 views, the post disappeared?
This would be technically trivial to implement, though it would be a big change so many people would object:
Technology companies would surely fight this because they would make less money.
Private citizens would bristle at new and unfamiliar limitations.
But the alternative, living amid the ever-rising waste spewed by megascale, is unsustainable.
If megascale is the problem, downscale has to be the solution, somehow.
Just imagine how much quieter it would be online if it weren’t so loud…..
Hey Listeners what do you think?
1.Do you think the problem of social media is because of “megascale”- too many people posting too much too often? What about you – do you post too much too often?
2.And do you think limiting how much we can post would help with this problem?

Hey Simon what do you think?
Extreme weather is getting worse and more and more common, and more and more people are suffering because of it, and yet our governments are continuing to pursue economic policies based on burning more and more and more fossil fuels in order to grow the economy more and more and more and….well...honestly it’s so that a few really rich people can get even richer….in my opinion.
So...what do we do? I was watching the video about blocking the roads in England, and thinking “could we do that in Okinawa? Would someone want to do that in Japan?” and I think “No, that’s really not going to work”, in Japan we are much more likely to inconvenience ourselves not other people, with things like a hunger strike, in order to make a political point.
Let’s hope that kind of thing doesn’t become necessary in Japan, let’s keep pushing the government to actually take action so that we don’t have to do that kind of thing….
Thanks for letting me vent♥
Hey listeners what do you think?
Your turn to vent!
Would you like some tea?

2. We should also stop making it worse by burning fossil fuels, and yet…..how can we get governments to act to stop?

[my thoughts]: I think politically and socially things are changing fast: more and more people (including those with social and financial power) are realising that potentially this could be it – the collapse of organized human society – if we don’t respond adequately to this problem. There is hope...but emissions are still going up, so we all need to do everything we can….
